Misty mountain landscape of Bijagua, Costa Rica

The Story of a Place

Where the Land Has Memory

Between two volcanoes, a world took shape. These are its stories.

Volcanic landscape between Miravalles and Tenorio

Origin Story

Born Between Fire and Cloud

Bijagua de Upala sits in one of the most unusual geographic pockets in all of Central America — a narrow valley cradled between the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes, where their competing weather systems collide to create a microclimate found nowhere else on Earth.

The result is a landscape of almost impossible richness. Mist rolls in from the Caribbean slope while warm Pacific air rises from the west. Rain falls with a regularity that feeds rivers, fills cloud forests, and sustains a biodiversity that scientists are still mapping.

This is not a place that was discovered so much as slowly revealed — first to the indigenous Maleku people who called it home for centuries, then to the Costa Rican settlers who arrived in the 20th century, and now, quietly, to the travelers who find their way here.

A microclimate found nowhere else on Earth — where two volcanoes shape everything.

The First People

The Maleku and the Sacred Forest

Long before roads reached this valley, the Maleku people moved through these forests with a knowledge of the land that took generations to build. Their relationship with Tenorio and its rivers was not one of conquest but of conversation.

The River's Secret

Why Río Celeste Runs Blue

The Ticos have a saying: God was painting the sky and washed his brushes in the river. The science tells a different story — but no less magical. Where two rivers meet beneath Tenorio, a chemical reaction turns the water an impossible turquoise.

A Village Takes Root

How Bijagua Became a Community

The first settlers arrived with machetes and ambition, carving farms from cloud forest on the slopes of Miravalles. What they built over generations is a community defined by its relationship with the land — and a quiet pride in a place the rest of the world is only beginning to notice.
